YouTube Gems: Phil Keaggy
Every so often I go on YouTube and search for videos of some of my favorite guitarists. This last time I decided to try my all-time favorite: Phil Keaggy. Phil Keaggy is the most complete guitarist I have ever seen. He simply does it all — extremely well. Not just electric, not just acoustic, not just one style, Phil seem to be able to play everything well.
The first video I choose was County Down off Phil’s Beyond Nature album — one of the best acoustic records of all time, in my opinion. Phil has spent the past decade or so playing solo acoustic guitar using a looping setup. He is a master “looper”, but as this clip shows, he really doesn’t need to.
The next clip is an 80’s era (hence the cheesy drum machine) shredder Riverton that shows his lyrical electric playing on a Zion electric. If you want to see a very young Phil rocking out on electric, search for Glass Harp, the early 70’s rock trio Phil played in.
I may make this a regular blog item. Email me and let me know what you think, or offer some suggestions for other great guitar videos.
