Amp Spotlight: Egnater Rebel 20
It has been a long time since I got excited about a new amp model, but there is a new one on the market that qualifies for my “If I had more money, tell you what I’d do” list. The Egnater Rebel 20 is one of the new “mini stack” amps on the market. But this is no ordinary small tube amp. It is packed with innovative features such as the TUBE MIX control which allows you to “mix” — not just swap — between the two 6V6 and EL84 tubes onboard. So you can go from American to British tones or a variable mix of both. You can also dial the power from 1 to 20 watts. And the best part is these controls are on the front of the amp - where controls belong. It also sports way cool looks.
I know many players love the sound of a half stack pushing air through four speakers, but I have gotten to the point in my life where the smaller, lighter, and less complicated my rig, the better I like it. If I had a crew of roadies and a guitar tech pampering me, I might feel otherwise, but I don’t, so compact and light are two of my favorite things. Which is why the small size and light weight (16 pounds) of the Rebel 20 head is very appealing to me. Unfortunately the matching cab is 31 pounds, which is manageable, but not as light my Fender Ultralight 112 cab which is only 17 pounds.
Here are the full specs:
- • 0-20 Watt All-Tube Head
- • Variable Wattage Control from 1w to 20w
- • Tube Mix Blends Between 6V6 and EL84 Power Tubes
- • Master Volume, Gain, Three Band EQ
- • Egnater Signature Tight and Bright Voicing Switches
- • Effects Loop
- • Powered by Groove Tubes
- • 100V/115V/230V Switchable
- • Rugged Shoulder Bag Included
The head has a street price of $599, and the cab goes for $249, which is a sweet price for a high quality tube amp. It is good thing they don’t offer a combo version. I may not be able to resist.
