Copacabana Guitar

No this is not a blog about that “classic” Barry Manillow song — admit it, you know the one I’m talking about. Nope, it’s about a guitar. The Copacabana Guitar. Actually all five of them.

The Web is full of unusual, custom-made guitars, but this one was just so wacky, yet so totally cool, I had to share it. The former editor-in-chief of the Finnish guitar magazine Plectra, Antti J. Kallio, was browsing through a catalog of designs by Finnish designer Eero Aarnio when he saw a table. Inspired, he decided that the table shape would make a cool guitar body. He contacted Eero Aarnio and convinced him design the guitar body. He then commissioned guitar builder Juha Lottonen, who he had met during his guitar magazine days, to build the guitars.

Conan O'Brian and the Copacabana guitar

As I was browsing the retro-looking website, I felt like I was in a time warp. Perhaps this is how the Web would have looked if it existed in the 1960’s. And wouldn’t the guitar look right at home in an Austin Power’s movie? Then as I hit the News page link — BAM! — culture clash. There was a picture of Conan O´Brien playing “Number 03.” This is for real. Apparently Conan, who is guitar player, purchased one and had it delivered to him on his show. Yeah baby!

The guitars are built to order and are limited to a run of 100. Apparently there are only five completed so far, so you still have a chance to snag one. Unfortunately the matching amp designed by Ural Tone amps is a “one off” and not available for sale.
