I found that this amp highlights your playing ability and reflects on your style. It is definitely not for the faint hearted. The amp has a very distinct roar no matter the tone or effects used. It is a stage amp and is at waste sitting at home. One main piece of advice I have about this amp is you MUST run a power brake/hotplate of some sort, it’s just as important as your lead.

I play guitar for an alternative/rock band and I was unsure whether this amp would fit in with our music, but it definitely did I was surprised about the unique and diverse tones — this amp moulds to your sound. I use a lot of pedals (all true bypass) and the amp takes them very well especially with the effects loop. I have done a few modifications to this amp. Some say they are useless and for nerds but I think their wrong. To get full potential from this amp I suggest you do them. The amp is made for it, its not like a TSL, they sound OK from the box but this amp is (no joke) the best amp you’ll ever hear when you have done your own personal mods. With mine a made a new PTP board, got a new Mercury Magnetics output transmitter, replaced the can caps 50uf x 50uf’s with 32uf x 32uf’s and finally got a set of Valve art KT-66s (biased to 39mA) now it rules over the TSL. The amp is used by countless amounts of guitar gods, and used in so many different styles — The Smashing Pumpkins, Led Zeppelin, Deftones, Eric Clapton just to name a mere few. If you go the right way with this amp you will never bother using anything else.

Mine fell off a 6ft drop (two quads on top of each other) and didn’t even make a scratch — it was stupid. My other band mate had a TSL (hence the comparing throughout the review) and he had to take it back 4 times! And he is the most careful person I know when it comes to equipment. I don’t take any care of my stuff whatsoever so for it to still look brand new is something remarkable.

The product is an old Marshall Super Lead tube amp. It works really well at being a freakin’ loud guitar amp that cuts through bass and drums. It is easy to use/play, but getting a tone you really like is harder. It’s something you have to work with. It is a great rock amp. It depends on what application you are using it for. I give it a 4 because It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. This was a 100 watt head but I had it converted to 50 watts because it was so loud.

It sounds very trebly/mid-range, not much bottom end. It does sound great, if set up right. There is a low input and high input and I use (now) the high one. I go for a mostly clean but slightly gritty Strat through a Marshall tone, and use pedals to drive it into distortion. I usually have to back right off on the amp’s treble control and I always have the bass cranked. One thing this amp does not sound like is mud. It is a nice articulate amp. Mostly I play a Strat with Kinman pickups so it is a mid to top kinda sound. This amp does sound great with humbuckers as well though. The higher output the pickups, the harder it is to get a clean tone out of it. I have my Strat pickups set quiet low (away from strings). Old Marshalls are temperamental. Sometimes they sound great sometimes not so great but I am extremely fond of this and I shall probably stick with it. 3.5 because guitar, pedals etc. have a lot to do with it as well, and you can really shred your ears (or the audiences) with this if it is too loud or badly eq’ed. I do love it though. Strangely enough, I was playing one day, and my dad, who is the most un-rock’n’roll guy in the universe, remarked at what a nice sound it was.

This is built to last. All the tubes/circuits etc are housed in the toughest (and heavy) wooden case. Probably near on impossible to hurt. My head was built sometime in the early 70’s but is extremely tough and gig worthy.
