Guitar Effects Questions & Answers

Question

What are the advantages/disadvantages of using individual effects pedals or using a multi-effects unit in terms of effect/sound quality? - Matthew

Answer

The advantage of individual effects is you get to pick the individual effects from any brand. The disadvantage is they cost more if you buy several, you need a pedalboard and a lot of short cables, and you can't program multi-effect "patches" like you can on a multi-effects unit.

The advantage of multi-effects is they are compact (you only need one unit), they have tons of effects, and you can program them into multi-effects presets or patches. The disadvantage is you get only what they put in the box. Of course you can add single effects to a multi-effects unit if you like. I add a wah and a volume pedal to my multi-effects unit (an old Korg GA30X.)

Each brand of multi-effects has its own sound quality so you need to try them out. A warning: the presets are usually awful — designed to show off wild effects but not useful/musical effects.
