This pedal comes with no manual. All of the instructions needed to operate it are included on a sticker on the bottom of the unit. That basically says it all. The idea of this pedal is to take a Vari-Tone switch, like on a Gibson hollowbody, and put it in pedal form. Basically, it alters the tone of your guitar. You can make your Les Paul sound like a Telecaster, if you want, or vice versa. That sounds crazy, and a bit too good to be true, but it works! I think that one day, this will be standard equipment. There is no other effect on the market that does what it does.

The sound quality is what you make it, but it will always be good. I have the most fun using the pedal with my Vox Valve-Tone (another great pedal). By using the two together, I've gotten a really vicious, biting sound with tons of sustain. Another cool thing I've discovered is the “Bite” setting on the Attack Control, which brings out the higher frequencies and is especially more noticeable on the bass notes. I have even gotten convincing jazz guitar sounds out of my Strat. Cool. Another neat feature — the dog's eyes are actually LED lights, both of which light up when the effect is engaged. This actually does make a difference to me. When those eyes are lit up, I just go “Yeah!” and I want to shred my fingers.

The pedal doesn't look as sturdy as other effects out there, but don't worry, it will take a beating. I did have a problem with volume drop at first when I stepped on my Vox, but that problem has miraculously disappeared. I would be remiss if I didn't say anything about Snarling Dogs' legendary customer support. They are a small company run by a President and CEO Charlie Stringer (his real name). He can be reached by e-mail by anyone who has a question, comment, or problem with one of his products. I have e-mailed him several times, and he has always responded within 24 hours. The Web is littered with testemonials from people who have benefited from his helpfulness. He's also got a really twisted sense of humor. [Editor Note: Charlie Stringer has passed away.]
