  6. Great road guitar. Best sounding $400.00 I’ve ever played. Frankly, this guitar is probably better sounding than most anything under $1000.00. It has a great neck, a little on the thin side which makes playing a little easier than on other guitars. If you can find one of these babies in good condition, spend some time with it. I know three people with Guild D4s and they all love them. If Fender had half a brain, they would bring them back along with the Guild craftsmen from Westerly, RI.

  9. Nice sound. Each string is clear. I put a B-Band AST with and A1 preamp in it and it sounds as close to a true acoustic sound as possible when amplified. The sound is very well balanced and you get a very nice, deep, but not boomy bass. I recorded a whole CD using this guitar and use it 90% of the time. Most people who are into guitars comment on the great sound.

  11. Construction

  12. Well built. No glue gobs or mistakes. This makes a great road guitar because it is pretty solid but not overbuilt like the older Guild Jumbos. This is a good weight, but still feels solid. No buzzing, no noises. Machines are original (Grover I think) and hold a tune for days and weeks sometime.

  6. This guitar, for the price, is everything you want from an acoustic. The neck is the perfect width and easy to grasp. As far as maintenance... very little, just make sure to use a “Dampit” during the winter months and you should have no problems. And as always... KEEP IT IN ITS CASE!!! when you are not playing it.

  12. I have owned this guitar for almost 2 years and normally by then you can tell if a guitar is going to last the test of times. As far as maintenance... very little. I have not encountered one problem from this guitar.

  6. This guitar is a pleasure to play. the neck and fingerboard are an easy reach for me. I played about 30 different manufacturers and models when I was shopping around and kept coming back to this one. High end of the fingerboard is rock solid.

  9. For the dollars, this has gotta be the best sounding axe out there. Extremely warm tones, whether finger picking or strumming. I managed to get hold of one with a shallower curve to the back. Very nice.

  12. Mechanicals are great. I’ve played mine for an hour a day for a year, no problems. Keep it humidified in the winter. A great value for the money.

  6. Nicely made instrument. Great price versus performance. Plays and sounds extremely well. This guitar far out-distances anything in its class, with the exception of the Martin DM, which is comparable. I chose it over much more expensive guitars in a test where I didn’t know the prices. One of the best bargains in acoustic guitars today... could be a classic of its own one day.

  9. The natural finish seems to let the guitar “breathe.” The guitar projects nicely and has good tonal balance. I always look for an acoustic guitar that has some bite to it, as many are dull and lifeless. This not only has bite, but body and resonance too.

  11. Construction

  12. The construction appears to be very good. It is solid but not too rigid, very comfortable with good action and spring. The Mahogany back, sides and neck have a nice appearance, as does the rosewood board. My board is a lighter color with darker streaks in it. The satin finish feels very nice, better than gloss IMHO. Workmanship is outstanding for a guitar in this price range. There seems to have been a certain pride taken in making this instrument, like they were ignoring the price factor and doing the most with what they had. They definately overachieved... BUT DON’T TELL THEM THAT!

  6. I was looking for an accoustic with a solid top. I played several Fenders and various other guitars that fell within the $500 price range. I picked up the D4 and instantly knew that this is what I wanted. The sound is very bright but still mellow. It is much louder than the other guitars I had tried. It is a solid spruce top with a satin finish. The lack of laminate or gloss coating definately makes a difference in the sound. The neck is very easy to grasp and play.

  8. Sound Quality

  9. The sound quality is excellent. The D4 is the lowest end model for Guild accoustics, however, Guild as a brand is considered a high-end guitar to begin with. So, even the lowest end model is better than most other guitars on the market. The sound is bright and loud but it still has a mellow tendency.

  12. The neck is 1-piece mahogany with a rosewood fretboard and bridge. The tuners are very well constructed and solid. The body is sturdy and the finish is hand-rubbed satin. The back is an arched Mahogany as well as solid Mahogany sides. I am very impressed with the construction. I do not feel at all concerned about the construction of this instrument.
