Jackson Performer PS-4

  2. Band: Strangers with Candy

  3. Model Year: 1985

  4. Price Paid: $110

  5. Performance

  6. It does everything I want it to do and can do a lot of stuff I'm not capable of doing. Holds tune very well and is crisp and distinct when playing solo's. Pots are linear (1/2 way on knob is half way on volume) and no problems with selector switch or pickups. I threw on a Super-distortion and massive bridge block and the thing sustains forever, even without drive. Mine is black which is a P.I.T.A. to keep clean but when it IS, it's really something.

  7. Performance Rating: 9

  8. Sound Quality

  9. Dynamic range is excellent, pissed off sounding at higher volumes and warm, tender at low. Rhythm sounds have nice growl...lot of chunk. No buzz or out of tune sound from pickup field. I own 10 GOOD guitars with active and passive, this one has passive and it's my star. Harmonics ring like bells and "pinch-harmonics" are really easy to get. Single middle pickup is weak, but that's gonna go bye-bye as soon as I'm done building my Strat.

  12. As soon as you pick it up, you can tell it's a serious guitar. You could drive railroad spikes with it all day and it would still be in tune. Once I saw it get bumped off a 6 ft. stage and when I picked it up, it was perfect, ready to play. No shoddy workmanship, nothing loose and rattling around, no crackle from the pots or switch. Jackson's F.R. knockoff bridge could be better quality though and black finish on hardware is wearing off in places (the thing IS 25 years old.) Paint job is holding up really well, except for a couple dings, it could look brand new. If you're thinking about one GRAB IT WITH BOTH HANDS.

  6. This guitar is BAD!! I can say this one of the best investments that I have ever made. This guitar is an assault rifle, made for aggressive playing styles.

  9. I'm not all that crazy about the pick ups. they are a bit too scratchy for my taste even after tweaking my effects several times. Im most likely gonna put some Duncans in the bridge position but it does make a nice crisp clean tone for strumming.

  12. This guitar is extremely well built and I would definitely recommend it for any level player. The neck and fingerboard are ideal for my style of playing and extremely comfortable.

  6. I have my fair share of guitars. I honestly didn’t buy this guitar for its performance, I bought it because it’s a genuinely attractive instrument. After spending some time with it and comparing it to others I own or have played, I realized that this is probably the most playable guitar I have ever come across next to an original Heritage Les Paul. The thin fast action neck is amazingly smooth and easy to play and the frets are perfect. The Floyd Rose action takes some getting used to, but is a great accessory for a great guitar.

  9. I bought it used 5 years after I saw it sitting on the same stand I bought it off of. I think I was the only person to touch it since it entered to store. I’m not sure if the strings have EVER been changed, but I know they’re at least 5 years old. With that in mind, I find the tone to be somewhat overbearing but (thankfully) that is adjustable. I play it out of my crap 10 watt amp, which has to be taken into account, but it still sounds worth every penny that it would have cost if I wasn’t much for negotiations.

  12. Well, it has got some age on it, some scratches and stuff. The volume knob is kinda, well I don’t know what it is. Normally when a knob is turned it stops. After my volume knob is turned all the way in either direction it stops but can be turned more and I hear something turning inside but like I said, it’s old and I am not the original owner so who knows what was done to it. I try to take care of my stuff but you know, straps aren’t reliable and coordination is overrated, but aside from the stuff before me, it has taken what I dish out so I would say it’s good.

  9. I think the pickups were good, but I immediately put EMG-85’s and EMG-SA in the guitar. It kicks butt.

  6. I like it, because it has a thin neck and it’s so easy to play. It’s a very fast guitar to play and doesn’t cost too much. I can’t play very well, but I love to practice with my Jackson.

  9. Without gain I like the sound but when I start to play something hard it’s a little bit too sharp. I haven’t adjusted the microphones, maybe that will help.

  6. It certainly does. I am a beginner and all I have to say, what a beautiful instrument and clear sharp sound. I have played the violin for seven years and I know a quality string instrument when I see one. The amazing thing is how the string vibrates for a good minute and a half after you strum it. I highly recommend this guitar. I got it for a great deal too.

  9. Like I said, sound is sharp and clear. It has a very beautiful sound, and when strummed the strings will vibrate for a good minute and a half!

  12. I am one for a beautiful instrument. The violin for example. This guitar has a beautiful transparent red (maple) finish and rosewood fingerboard. A great instrument to just stare at. No problems! YET!

  6. Great for shreddin or just strummin a few chords. Looks amazing, and also, chicks dig the spikey head. It takes a large ax to throw this puppy outta tune. Or a broken string, which is a pain to fix, but it’s all worth it as you dive and drive up and down the board! God bless Jackson.

  9. I love the pickups — great tone and good sustain. What more can I say?

  12. Well I’ve had lots of problems with the tremolo and I spotted rust after a year, but only a little, nothing to stop the greatness of this metal machine.
