  5. Performance

  6. First time I tried them, I was blown away, the best of both worlds: tone & volume! They're easy on the fingers as well. Note: GHS offers the “True medium” gauges only for some types of strings. I worked with one of their string gauge tension guides to customize a set of true medium Silk & Bronzes, and I'll never use an “unbalanced” set of strings again. I did some analysis of other string sets, and found that the tension between different strings in the same set tuned to concert pitch can vary up to 80%. This means that your fingers have to press some strings quite hard, some very lightly. Since, while playing, your fingers are jumping back & forth, with an unbalanced set, they're having to adjust tension with every change. This happens unconsciously, of course, but switching to a “balanced” set, you'll immediately feel the difference. There's always a difference of 15 or 20% inherent in the process. But minimizing the difference is a great advance.

  8. Sound Quality

  9. Most players seem to want the brightest possible sound from their guitars. I've gone backwards, from bright, bluegrass-style flatpicking to mellow fingerstyle, especially for the blues. I've found that these strings allow my Steve Wise custom jumbo to sound as sweet as a 40 year old “00.”

  11. Construction

  12. No problems — even with tuning up and down a lot. I change sets every month or so, playing an hour or two every day.

  13. Construction Rating: 10
