Question

I was just wondering if you would advise taking guitar lessons? I was thinking about it, but I haven't found anyone who teaches. What do you think? - Michael

Answer

Lessons are helpful for two reasons. First, they help you stay motivated. If you know you have to go to lessons each week you will be more likely to practice. Secondly, a good teacher will challenge you, answer your questions, inspire you, and introduce you to styles of music you probably wouldn't persue on your own. The key is finding a good teacher. I took lessons from a great jazz guitarist who taught me to play everything — rhythm guitar, lead guitar, sight reading — and opened my eyes to all styles of music. A great experience I will always be grateful for. If you live near a good music store, they can usually recommend a teacher. Also ask your guitar playing friends who they took (or take) lessons from.
