First String Notes
Let’s begin with three notes on the first string. The E note is an open string note. You don’t use any fingers to play this note, you just pick the 1st string. For the F note, place your 1st finger at the 1st fret (place your finger close to the 1st fret, but not on it, and press down.) The G note is played using your 3rd finger at the 3rd fret. Again, place your 3rd finger close to the fret but not on it. Try to use the tips of your fingers and make sure the notes ring cleanly after you pick them (no buzzing.)
Now let’s play these notes while counting the timing of the notes. Here are the 1st string notes played using whole notes. Remember to pick the note and count to 4 before picking the next note.
Here are the 1st string notes played using half notes. Remember to pick the note and hold it for 2 beats before picking the next note.
Here are the 1st string notes played using quarter notes. Each note gets one beat (count.)
First Song
Here is your first song. If you are working with a teacher, have the teacher play the chords while you play the notes (melody.) If you are already familiar with the chords, take turns alternating between chords and notes. Use the same rhythm for the chords as the notes (strum the chords once for each note.)
