Eighth Notes
The eighth note gets one half of a beat. Two Eighth notes equal one beat. Eighth notes are written two different ways. When they are by themselves, they look like a quarter note with the addition of a flag to the stem. In groups of two or more, Eighth notes are connected using a beam.
When you count a measure containing eighth notes is helpful to add the word “and” between quarter notes: 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and, 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and, etc.
