Eighth Note Strumming

by Mark Starlin

So far you have been strumming quarter note strums (4 beats per measure.) Now you are going to strum using all eighth note strums. Each eighth note gets 1/2 a beat so there are eight strums per measure. The bar indicates that each strum is equal to an eighth note and gets half of a beat. You start by strumming down on the first beat, then strum up on the half beat.

Strumming eighth note strums

Remember that two eighth note strums together equal one beat, so count “1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and.” The arrows points in the direction you should strum — down, up, down, up, down, up, down, up, etc. Start at a slow tempo and keep a smooth rhythm going.

Now try the same strumming pattern on a D Chord.

Eighth note strumming

Keep the strumming smooth and the tempo even.
