Rhythm Guitar Questions & Answers

by Mark Starlin

Question

How do you palm mute?

Answer

If you have a fixed bridge on your guitar (like a Les Paul — no whammy bar), rest the palm (heel) of your picking hand on the bridge and slightly touch the strings with your palm. If you have a guitar with a floating bridge (and whammy bar like a Strat), you'll have to practice resting the palm of your hand lightly on the strings. Light enough to mute the strings but not hard enough to throw the guitar out of tune.
