Buddy Guy

Buddy Guy

By Tony Dehner

I was already a Buddy Guy fan when I just happened to come across a performance of his one night on the public television program “Austin City Limits.” I sat there in awe watching him play for about 45 minutes in front of a very appreciative audience. During one of the later songs, he was ripping it up on a solo and broke his high E string. The audience kind of went, “Ooh!” But Buddy just smiled and said, “That’s all right.” He took the string off and gave to a pretty young girl in the front row. Then he continued to solo — on five strings — until a tech brought him his back-up guitar. My jaw hung open this whole time. Buddy Guy is not only a blues guitar legend, he sets the standard of “cool” for musicians.

Maybe it was a concert, or a CD (or an LP for us older players), or a song on the radio. There is usually one defining moment when we hear a player for the first time and they become our hero.

Here is your chance to tell the story of how a particular player became your hero. If you have an interesting story to tell, simply email me the story. Be sure to include the name of your hero and your name.
